FiveM low FPS fix: settings, texture budget and server-side causes

Low FPS on FiveM servers but fine in single player? Fix it with graphics settings, the Extended Texture Budget, GPU settings, background apps, and server-side causes.

You run GTA V at a smooth 100 FPS, then join a server and drop to 30, or the game stutters every few seconds. FiveM low FPS has two groups of causes: your PC and settings, and what the server asks your PC to do. Check them in that order.

First, measure

Press F8 in game to open the console and type:

text
resmon 1

This shows the resource monitor on your screen. It lists each client resource with its CPU time (ms) and memory. If one script is always high, the server owner has a problem to fix. If every resource is low, look at your PC and settings.

Compare with single player or another server. If only one server is slow, the server is the cause. If all FiveM servers are slow, it is your setup.

Game graphics settings

Open the pause menu > Settings > Graphics. The options that cost the most:

  • MSAA and reflection MSAA: turn off, or set the lowest. This is the biggest gain for many cards.
  • Shadow quality, soft shadows, long shadows: lower them.
  • Grass quality: very demanding in the countryside, set to Normal.
  • Population density and variety, distance scaling: lower, these also load the CPU.
  • Post FX and tessellation: lower or off.
  • Extended distance scaling and extended shadows distance: reduce if you are CPU limited.

Keep textures at a level your video memory can hold. Cutting textures only helps if you run out of VRAM.

Extended Texture Budget

In the FiveM settings, you can change how much texture memory the game is allowed to use with the Extended Texture Budget slider. The exact place and wording depend on your FiveM version, but it is in the FiveM game settings, not in GTA's own graphics menu.

It exists because servers stream many textures (clothing, vehicles) and the default can run out, which shows as missing or blurry textures. See Oversized assets and texture loss.

For FPS the rule is simple: match it to your card.

  • 4 GB cards: keep it modest.
  • 8 GB cards and more: you have room to raise it a bit.
  • A value above what your GPU has makes the system use slower memory and the game stutters.

If you see stutters when moving through busy areas, test with a lower value before anything else.

GPU driver settings

Generic options that help on both NVIDIA and AMD:

  • Update the driver.
  • Set the power mode to maximum performance (NVIDIA Control Panel: Power management mode, or AMD's performance profile).
  • Turn off driver features that add work, such as sharpening, anti-lag modes or image enhancement you did not ask for.
  • On a laptop, make sure FiveM uses the dedicated GPU: Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add FiveM and set it to high performance.

Background apps and overlays

Anything running in the background takes CPU, RAM or disk.

  • Close browsers with many tabs, launchers, and recording tools.
  • Disable overlays (Discord, Afterburner, Steam). They can also cost frames.
  • Set the Windows power plan to a performance profile.
  • Keep FiveM and GTA V on an SSD. A hard disk makes streaming stutter badly.

Server-side causes

If resmon points at the server, nothing you change on your PC will fix it.

Heavy scripts. A resource that runs a loop every frame, draws markers or checks entities constantly burns client CPU time. The server owner can find them with the same monitor and fix them. Read High resmon ms: how to optimize a resource.

Too many streamed addon cars. Each addon vehicle adds models and textures that your PC must load, and large files fill the video memory fast. Hundreds of high detail cars lead to low FPS and texture loss. The fix is on the server: fewer, optimized vehicles. See How to add addon cars to FiveM for how to add them properly.

Large MLOs and maps. Many props in one interior or a map with overlapping assets reduce FPS in that area only. If the low FPS happens in one place, suspect a map.

Tip: server owners should ask players where the FPS drops. "Everywhere" points to scripts, "in the city" points to maps and props, "when many cars are around" points to vehicles.

Clear the cache

A corrupted cache gives stutters that no setting fixes. Delete it as in How to clear the FiveM cache and test again.

Checklist

Symptom Fix
Low FPS on one server only Run resmon 1, report the heavy resource to the owner
Low FPS everywhere Lower MSAA, shadows, grass and population in GTA settings
Stutters, blurry or missing textures Adjust the Extended Texture Budget to your VRAM
Laptop is slow Force FiveM to the dedicated GPU
Drops after opening other apps Close background apps and overlays
Drops only near cars or one map Server has too many addon cars or a heavy MLO
Stutters after an update Clear the FiveM cache

Quick answers

Why is my FPS lower on FiveM than in GTA Online or story mode?

FiveM servers run many scripts and stream extra content, such as addon cars, maps and clothing. That costs CPU time and video memory on your PC, on top of GTA V itself.

How do I know if the server causes my low FPS?

Open the F8 console and run resmon 1. If a resource uses a lot of CPU time on your client, or FPS is low only on one server, the cause is on the server side.

Should I max out the Extended Texture Budget?

No. Raise it only as far as your graphics card's video memory allows. Too high and the game starts swapping memory, which causes stutter instead of fixing it.
