txAdmin forgot password: reset the master account and get back in
Locked out of txAdmin? How the first-setup PIN works, how to reset the master account by moving admins.json out of txData, and what to check on port 40120.
You open txAdmin and the password does not work, or you never wrote it down, or the admin who set it up left. Here is how the login works and how to get back in.
How txAdmin logins work
The first time you start txAdmin, it prints a PIN in the console. You open the panel in your browser, enter that PIN, and create the master account. You can link it to your Cfx.re account (the "Login with Cfx.re" option) or use a username and password.
That is the only moment the PIN is used. After the master account exists, txAdmin does not show a PIN again, and the console does not reprint a password because txAdmin does not store it in readable form.
So if you lose the password you have two cases:
- You linked the account to Cfx.re: log in with Cfx.re instead. No password is needed, just the same Cfx.re account.
- You used a username and password and lost it: reset the master account, as below.
Reset the master account
Warning: this removes the txAdmin panel accounts. It does not touch your server data, but make a copy of the file first so you can undo it.
- Stop txAdmin and the server. Close the console window, or stop the service or screen session that runs it.
- Open your txData folder. This is the folder txAdmin created for its data, and the one you chose during setup. Inside there is a profile folder, called
defaultunless you named it otherwise. - Find the file
admins.json. Its exact location depends on the txAdmin version, so look inside the profile folder and itsdatasubfolder if there is one. - Copy it somewhere safe, then move or rename the original, for example to
admins.json.bak. - Start txAdmin again.
txAdmin sees there is no admin account and treats it as a first setup. It prints a new PIN in the console. Open the panel, enter the PIN and create a new master account. Your server profile, your server.cfg and your settings are still there.
If you moved the file and txAdmin still logs you in or complains, you moved the wrong copy. Make sure you used the file in the txData folder of the profile that is actually running.
Tip: do not edit
admins.jsonby hand to try to change a password. The passwords are stored hashed, so a typed password will not work. Moving the file and creating a new master account is the safe route.
Find the PIN
The PIN appears in the txAdmin console output. Where you see it depends on how you run it:
- Windows, running FXServer.exe: in the console window that opens.
- Linux in a screen or tmux session: reattach to that session and read the output. With a systemd service, use
journalctl -u your-service-name. - A host panel: in the console tab of the control panel.
The PIN is short and valid for the setup session. If you missed it, restart txAdmin and read the new one.
Can't open the panel at all
Sometimes the password is fine and the page does not load. txAdmin listens on TCP port 40120 by default, so the address is:
http://127.0.0.1:40120from the same machine, or http://your.server.ip:40120 from another one. Check:
- txAdmin is running. If you see only the game server console and no txAdmin lines, you started FXServer without txAdmin.
- The firewall allows TCP 40120 if you connect from outside. See port forwarding and firewall for the commands.
- You are not using
httpson a port that is plainhttp. - On a host, the panel may be proxied to another address. Use the link your host gives you.
If you change the port, start txAdmin with the txAdminPort convar, for example +set txAdminPort 40121, and open that port instead.
Keep this from happening again
After you are back in:
- Link the master account to your Cfx.re account. It is the login that cannot be forgotten.
- Add yourself as a second admin with another login. In the txAdmin panel there is an Admin Manager where you create more accounts and choose their permissions.
- Give other staff their own accounts instead of sharing the master one. That way you can remove one person without resetting everything.
- Store the txData folder in your backups. It holds your txAdmin config and history.
If you also want your admins to have rights in game, that is a separate setting, covered in making yourself admin with ACE permissions.
Checklist
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Forgot the password | Stop txAdmin, back up and move admins.json, start again, use the new PIN |
| Account linked to Cfx.re | Use Login with Cfx.re, no reset needed |
| No PIN visible | Read the txAdmin console, or restart to get a new one |
| Page does not load | Check TCP 40120, firewall, and that txAdmin is running |
| Lost the other admins too | Add them again in the Admin Manager after the reset |
| Reset did nothing | You moved the file from the wrong txData profile |
Quick answers
How do I reset my txAdmin password?
Stop the server, move the admins.json file out of your txData profile folder (keep a backup copy), then start again. txAdmin prints a new PIN in the console that you use to create a new master account.
Will I lose my server or resources if I reset the admin account?
No. admins.json only holds the panel accounts. Your server.cfg, resources, database and txAdmin settings stay as they are. You will need to add your other admins again.
What port does txAdmin use?
40120 by default, over TCP. Open it in the firewall if you reach the panel from another machine, for example http://your.server.ip:40120.
