Verify GTA V game files for FiveM: Steam, Epic and Rockstar launcher

FiveM refuses to start or crashes on modified game files? Verify GTA V on Steam, Epic Games and the Rockstar launcher, and keep your GTA folder free of old mods.

FiveM refuses to start, reports a problem with your game, or crashes while it loads. A damaged or modified GTA V is a common cause, and the fix costs nothing: let your launcher check the files and re-download the broken ones.

Why GTA V must be clean

FiveM does not ship GTA V. It uses your installed copy, and it expects the files to be the original ones from the launcher. Files that are corrupted, half updated, or changed by old mods can lead to:

  • FiveM refusing to start or saying it cannot use the game
  • crashes during loading or at the first join
  • strange graphics, missing textures or errors that no setting fixes

Verifying is the first thing to try before you reinstall anything.

Verify on Steam

  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Right-click Grand Theft Auto V and open Properties.
  3. Go to Installed Files (the tab name can vary by Steam version).
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files.

Steam checks everything and downloads what is wrong. It can take several minutes.

Verify on Epic Games

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
  2. Click the three dots next to Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. Open Manage, then click Verify.

Verify on the Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher and go to Settings.
  2. Open My Installed Games, and select Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. Use the Verify Integrity button.

Tip: menu names change between launcher versions. In all three launchers the idea is the same: Library, then the game, then the verify or integrity option.

When it ends, start FiveM again. If FiveM asks for the game folder, select the one that contains GTA5.exe. FiveM won't open or gets stuck explains how to reset the path.

Modified files that break FiveM

Verify only fixes files the launcher knows. It does not remove extra files that you added. These are the usual culprits:

  • dinput8.dll in the GTA V folder, from ScriptHook V or an ASI loader
  • ScriptHookV.dll, ScriptHookVDotNet and similar files
  • .asi plugins and a plugins folder
  • an OpenIV mods folder, or edited .rpf archives
  • trainers, cheat tools, or old single player mod packs

Look in the GTA V folder, the one with GTA5.exe. If you see any of the above, move them out, to a backup folder, then verify the files again.

powershell
# example: move suspicious files to a backup folder next to GTA V
$gta = "D:\Games\Grand Theft Auto V" # change to your path
$bak = Join-Path $gta "_removed_mods"
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path $bak -Force | Out-Null
Move-Item "$gta\dinput8.dll" $bak -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Move-Item "$gta\ScriptHookV.dll" $bak -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Move-Item "$gta\mods" $bak -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Check the list before you run something like this, and do not move files you do not recognise without a look. Moving, not deleting, lets you go back.

Keep GTA V clean

  • Do not mod the FiveM copy. If you want single player mods, keep a second install of the game for that, away from the one FiveM uses.
  • Do not use cracked or copied versions. FiveM needs a legitimate game, and those copies are a risk for your PC.
  • Let the launcher update the game. An old, half updated install causes version errors.
  • Keep FiveM add-ons in FiveM. Servers stream what they need and FiveM keeps it in its own cache, not in your GTA folder.

When the GTA folder is clean and verified, you can also reset FiveM's own data by following How to clear the FiveM cache.

If it still fails

  • Verify again after removing the modded files, since a mod may have changed more than one file.
  • Reinstall the game from the launcher if verification keeps finding problems. A failing disk can corrupt files again and again, so check the drive too.
  • Read FiveM crashes on startup for the crash report steps.

Quick answers

Does verifying game files delete my saves or settings?

No. Verification checks the game files against the original and downloads the ones that are broken or changed. Your settings and FiveM data are not part of it.

Can single player mods stay in the GTA V folder?

It is best that they do not. Files such as ScriptHook, dinput8.dll or an OpenIV mods folder can make FiveM refuse to start or crash. Keep a separate copy of the game for modding.

Do I need to verify after every GTA V update?

No. Only verify when FiveM crashes, refuses to start, or reports a problem with the game files.
